Chloe's 4-H Square-Foot Garden

One of Chloe's 4-H projects this year includes a square-foot garden. Brad and Ben built the frame.

Then, Chloe mixed the dirt following the instructions in the book:

~constructing the "square-foot" dividers:

~She watered the dirt well...

...and then planted seedlings (tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, marigolds)

~Then, with Grandmother's and Kievan's help, she planted seeds in the other squares (radishes, broccoli, cauliflower, carrots, and several kinds of lettuces).

Now, a week later, ALL of the seeds have sprouted and are about an inch tall. The seedlings are all about twice as big. Next project: build frame for netting so the tomatoes and cucumbers will climb rather than spread.

Chloe, your garden is wonderful. I too like gardening. I have a square foot garden too, but it differs from you in that it is quite big, is built up about 2 feet and bricked in. That makes it easier for me to garden because of my bad knee and back I don't have to bend over. I am growing some corn (4 plants) 4 tomato plants with wire cages to hold the plants up, some lettuce and squash. Then I have many flowers in it such as daisies, tulips, cosmos and zinias. Then I three several envelopes of seeds in and they are sprouting all over. I also have an earth box with tomato plants in it. Gardening is such a nice hobby and I enjoy the vegetables and the flowers. I know your garden will grow and give you much pleasure. When you eat the fruits of your labor they will taste so much better.

I am so glad you are posting again and love all the pictures. You all look so happy and enjoy the things you do. As a great-grandmother I love seeing all the accomplishments and read about your life. In the "old" days the children lived nearby their grandparents. I lived across the street (a country street) from my grandma. Today we all live far apart. I know your Grandma Roper was happy to have a visit with you. I remember my girlhood from hearing about yours, especially Chloe reading the books on the walk back from the library. I used to do the same thing. Thank you for sharing your sunshiny living with me and your great granpa. Aren't you lucky to have a grandfather and a great grandfather. I share your blogs with your grandfather & great grandfather and he feels privileged to hear about your life. On Easter Eve my son and his wife will be here from San Francisco and I will see my new granddaughter for the first time. She is 6 months old and will be baptized that evening. We will have a catered dinner here afterward and celebrate such a glorious occasion.
