I Finally Gave In
You wouldn't know it if you visited me, but I'm a "glass" glass type of gal (as opposed to plastic glasses). I mean, a glass rim just feels right against the lips! I also think no one has an excuse to have a collection of mismatched glasses in their cupboard. Find a style you like and when it breaks...get another of the same style. Right?
So...how did I end up with this inelegant collection???

Nothing matches, half is plastic (the four glass glasses were actually left here by Mrs. D, the friend who visited last week) and this is literally my entire drinking utensil collection (with the exception of green goblets we use on holidays). How did this happen to me???
When we got married, we started off with about 12 of the d'Arq glasses, the remaining one pictured on the left below. As those broke, we could not afford to replace them. Eventually we opted for a less expensive glass (like the wine glass below, except as a tumbler) which we found at the Old Time Pottery in Williamsburg. We purchased about twenty of these, but they eventually all hit the dust and the Pottery stopped carrying them :-(
...See how well my "logical glass plan" is working out?

I never found another style I really liked, would work with kids, and that was within my pitiful financial range, so I started cannibalizing my other drinking utensil reserves. The Christmas mugs came out. The kids' Bunnykins mugs were commonly used. The odd mug from a trip was filled with orange juice at breakfast. Most broke. And...unbelievably, I began picking up those plastic 4 for $1.25 cups from Wal-Mart.
Well, I've been reading a lot of housekeeping/homemaking blogs and have been inspired to make my home better. One night, after preparing a big meal and serving it on my grandmother's china, I realized that not only did my plastic glasses not add anything to the meal's presentation, they detracted from it in a BIG way :-) The problem of "glasses" moved to the top of my make-it-nice priority list.
Soooo...this is my solution: Throw out my collection of leftovers and replace it with 24 16oz plastic tumblers from Sams (about .75 each). OK, ok, I know they are plastic...but the rims aren't really that bad. I promise! And, more importantly, they all match!
